21st Century Production: Technology, Performance & the
Workspace Narada Michael Walden (pictured) will be the keynote speaker at this year's Art of Record Production Conference.
Narada Michael Walden is a multi-Grammy winning, drummer, songwriter and
producer, with Producer, Album and Song of the Year awards to his credit. He
has 56 number one records to his name with artists as diverse as Aretha
Franklin and Wynonna Judd; Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones; The Temptations and
Jeff Beck. He was an integral part of introducing such superstars as Whitney
Houston and Mariah Carey to millions of fans worldwide and Billboard Magazine
has honored him as one of the Top Ten Producers of all time. He has also earned
equal acclaim as a recording and performing artist in his own right. Beginning
with his stint as drummer with the pioneering Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early
Seventies, through eleven acclaimed solo albums and numerous appearances at the
top of the Pop and R and B charts, Walden has branched into a wide range of
sonic arenas; from groundbreaking soundtrack work on such smash films as The
Bodyguard and Stuart Little to the Emmy-winning "One Moment In Time,"
perhaps best known as the theme to the 1988 Olympic Games.
Val Garay will give a plenary talk at the conference on the Saturday night and will participate in 'Mixing In The Box' panel discussion
Grammy award winning producer and engineer Val Garay started out by
engineering for artists such as Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, The Four Seasons,
Orleans, Donald Byrd and The Blackbyrds, Andrew Gold, JD Souther and Bonnie Raitt. His
production credits include Kim Carnes, The Motels, Joan
Armitrading, Marty Balin, Kenny Rogers, Santana, Dolly Parton, Pablo Cruise,
Neil Diamond, Sarah Brightman and Reel Big Fish. He is currently President of
Red Red Records.
Mix engineer, Stephen Hart
whose credits include White Stripes, Oscar Peterson, David Bowie, En Vogue,
Neville Brothers, Issac Hayes, Booker T and the MG’s, Tony Bennet and Bill
Evans, will also participate in the panel on ‘Mixing In The Box’.
Other highlights of the conference will include a panel on Women in Record Production and a plenary talk by Professor Albin Zak, author of The Poetics of Rock and I Don't Sound Like Nobody. Further details will be announced shortly.
